Disaster Management and DAG in exchange server 2013

Disaster Management:

Client side backup:

*outlook web app  does not support client side backup & recovery of emails

*MS Outlook supports client backup & recovery of emails

*In ms office outlook client while taking the backup we have to select .PST files

.PST(personal storage table/template)

*After taking back up the data will be in encrypted formatted

*In ms outlook client for storing office emails in local hard disk. it uses .OST(offline storage table) file format.

Note: In exchange 2010/2013 PST size is 50GB

Database availability Group(DAG)

* A DAG is group of up to 16 mailbox servers. that provides the structure for replicating and activating database copies.

* A DAG is a boundary for mailbox database replications

Recommendations :

witness server: it is used to store witness information.

witness directory: it is used on the witness server to store witness information .

DAG IP address: IP address are used by DAG

Windows server 2012 datacenter or WS 2008R2 datacenter or enterprise editions

The OS should be same within the DAG

Note:DAG Requires default gateway(for trouble shooting)

ACTIVE MANAGER: is present in every mailbox servers. Inside Microsoft exchange service.

the mailbox server which is not a part of DAG network. it has only one role under active manager. that is standalone manager.

the mail box servers which are part of a DAG. it has 2 rules under active manager. That is primary active manager and stand by manager.

Active manager is used to control the failover database .it has two roles PAM & SAM

primary active manager : will decide which database copies will be active and passive

Standard active manager: detects the failovers of database and the local information store.
